Is Upwork legit? 

Yes, Upwork is legit. I have used Upwork to hire a dozen contractors. They do all types of work. This includes websites, graphic design, customer service, and bookkeeping. It’s legit in that regard.

But below I’m going to discuss the platform from a contractor’s point of view.

Why do some contractors avoid Upwork and warn others to do the same? Why do they beat Upwork? I’ll be open and say that there is some level of truth to people’s whines about Upwork. Below, I’ve listed down these common whines and my related answers. 

5 Reasons Why Some People Don’t Like Upwork 

1. Upwork charges hefty fees

I’m sad to say that this is true, and the thing I don’t like the most about Upwork. When you make your first $500 from a client, Upwork tasks you a 20% fee. When you make the next $500, the fee drops to 10%. If you earn $10,000 from the same client, the fee dwindles to 5%. 

If you ask me, those costs suck. For example, I got paid $2,400 for contract work I did with a client. I had to pay $240 to Upwork! The number makes me start. 

But, I pay the fees even though it pains me. Upwork makes it possible for me to find so many clients in a very short time. I also don’t have to fear getting paid because landmarks are funded right from the start. 

So, to me, it’s yet fair that I get to set these fees. I hope they could be lower, but that’s the way it is. I understand why this might shift some people off. 

People will often gripe about the fees for using platforms. I understand, but it’s also small-minded. They don’t account for the fact that the firm paid millions of dollars to form a platform. It would even allow people to link for work across the globe. It’s amazing.

2. You can get booted out of Upwork any time 

Yes, this is 100% true. According to Upwork’s Terms of Service, your account can be broken or quit at any time if you don’t follow their rules. I’ve never known anyone who has been booted off Upwork, but I’m sure this occurs. 

I read some references online of some people whose funds have been closed for unfair reasons. This sort of stuff occurs on other media like Facebook Instagram YouTube and LinkedIn too. 

I wouldn’t use this reason to remain away from Upwork, though. When you go into Upwork, knowing this could occur, take vital protection to protect yourself. Read and follow Upwork’s policies. Add your clients on LinkedIn, so you have all their contact info. Should your account get broken for something little, you can still get a hold of them. 

3. Upwork gets a lot of bad reviews

I notice that many averse reviews come from people who couldn’t make it work for them. Also, some people who have never used it leave averse reviews. Some say they couldn’t find worthy clients. 

Upwork didn’t go for me in the front, either. It took some time for me to find a proper amount of clientele. Upwork is not everyone, quite those who are cross. 

4. Jobs at Upwork don’t pay well

Well, that’s true of some jobs. For example, a contractor friend told me about a job on Upwork. He said he needed five 1000 word blog posts done in 48 hours. I thought, okay, this should cost a lot because this is a lot of essays in a little time rack. 

It turns out that his entire funding for the project was $50. I knew that wouldn’t do, so I denied the offer and moved on. 

If you wait for projects that you think are worth your time and craft, it will do you a world of good. Why? One, you get settled more. Two, your track record will draw more high-paying clients. 

I’ve made $9,000 from one client who always sends me easy work. It’s a matter of finding people who understand that grade work requires higher payments. Now, if you’re willing to work for pennies, then Upwork will be a race to the base. 

5. The majority of freelancers on Upwork fail

You may be wondering if my win at Upwork was a chance. I decided to sign up at the right time and had a stroke of luck finding my clients. Could you repeat my success?

Since I’m real here, I should admit that my success on Upwork is an oddity. But when you think about it, any kind of success is always going to be an oddity. 

Yes, someone else could be setting in the same amount of work as me, but they’re not creating the type of money I’m raking in. 

But why would you go into Upwork thinking that you’re not going to be an oddity? Trust your skills and your finding making. You could be someone who can make six busts on Upwork, unlike most people on it. 

Should you join Upwork? 

I didn’t write this post to convince people to get on the platform and start making big dollars. The point is to shed light on Upwork’s benefits, most of which are managed these days. 

I know that many successful freelancers swore off Upwork. They’re convinced that the forum is useless. Maybe they’re right.

The point I’m trying to make is that it’s possible to gain money success on Upwork. It’s not the tallest goal either. Yes, it’s going to take some time and steps, but it’s very likely.

1. Get your client’s contact information as a back-up 

Upwork can break or close your account without warning you. It’s always best to have your client’s contact info on hand. Never deal with a client outside of Upwork because it breaks their Terms of Service. 

Only have your client’s contact details, in case. You always want to be available to them and let them know if you run into any problems. Link with them on LinkedIn or at least have their email address. 

2. Don’t rely solely on Upwork for your revenue

I thought that to set up many streams of pay; you have to focus on them one at a time. When you start working on Upwork, it will need a lot of focus, so don’t worry about doing anything else. 

When you’re starting to get in more clients, it may be time to ray out and look for more work elsewhere. Practical, you can’t rely on Upwork for the size of your income. Blessed freelancers get to work on Upwork , but this is seldom the case. 

3. Ignore the negativity surrounding Upwork

Many freelancers are trying to persuade everybody that Upwork isn’t worth your time. The funny thing is that most of these people didn’t give Upwork a fine shot. Upwork isn’t going to work out for you, but you’ll never know unless you feed it your best.
